Ray Seilie is a seasoned trial attorney with extensive experience in both civil and criminal litigation, positioning him to provide comprehensive legal solutions to clients facing their most complex and high-stakes legal problems. A graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Law School, Ray is valued by his clients for his ability to creatively strategize about effectively and efficiently accomplishing their goals at all stages of a dispute. He has a track record of delivering optimal results both in and out of the courtroom and is trusted by his clients to provide valuable guidance about internal investigations, pre-litigation settlement negotiations, and regulatory compliance issues, before the courts get involved.

Ray has successfully tried numerous cases to verdict, including one of the most significant fraud prosecutions brought by the U.S. Department of Justice, in a case that was recognized by the Daily Journal in its annual California Lawyer of the Year awards, by Benchmark Litigation as “Impact Case of the Year,” and by Global Investigations Review as “Most Important Case of the Year.” Ray has also argued appeals in the Ninth Circuit and California appellate courts and negotiated favorable resolutions in multimillion-dollar disputes involving major global corporations.

Ray is interested in the intersection of AI and the legal profession and is a founding member of the firm’s AI Committee, identifying opportunities for the firm to integrate AI technology into their workflows to benefit its clients while avoiding the well-documented pitfalls of the new technology. He has been quoted in articles covering the intersection of law and AI in publications such as NPR, NBC News, The Los Angeles TimesLaw.com, and Law360.

Before joining KHIKS, Ray practiced at Bird Marella and Munger, Tolles & Olson. He previously served as a Deputy City Attorney for Los Angeles and clerked for the Honorable Jay S. Bybee on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Representative Matters

  • As trial counsel, secured a full acquittal—a result achieved in fewer than one percent of indicted federal criminal cases—in one of the largest federal fraud trials brought by the U.S. Department of Justice. At trial, Ray cross-examined key government witnesses, including several whistleblowers and a partner at a big 4 accounting firm.
  • Successfully defended international K-pop group BTS and its label HYBE Corporation in federal copyright litigation, winning a complete defense judgment after the first motion to dismiss. Ray devised, developed, and implemented a strategy to not only win the motion, but to do so in a manner that prevented his client from the time and expense of additional rounds of litigation.
  • As trial counsel, successfully defended one of the country’s largest real estate firms in a multi-week jury trial involving allegations of defective construction and material non-disclosures related to a mixed-use development. At trial, Ray presented the testimony of his client’s executive officers and cross-examined the plaintiff’s damages expert.
  • As trial counsel, successfully defended a Fortune 200 company in an 18-plaintiff employment lawsuit, obtaining a complete defense judgment and a six-figure award of costs after a four-week jury trial. At trial, Ray cross-examined several of the plaintiffs, successfully moved to limit the testimony of the plaintiffs’ damages expert, and drafted a successful and rarely-granted motion for nonsuit that resulted in his client’s dismissal before the defense presentation of evidence.
  • Successfully defended a local magazine publisher against a defamation lawsuit, securing a voluntary dismissal of all claims by the plaintiff in exchange for an agreement not to seek compensation for attorneys’ fees and legal costs.
  • Represented Plains All American Pipeline in criminal litigation stemming from a major oil spill, securing dismissal of 37 of 46 charges and successfully arguing that the client should be fined less than one percent of the amount prosecutors were seeking. Ray devised, drafted, and argued key motions that resulted in the dismissal of charges that could have resulted tens of millions of dollars more in fines.
  • Successfully moved to vacate an arbitration award on behalf of a foreign advertising platform being sued by Google for a nine-figure amount.
  • As trial counsel, defended a real estate developer charged with making an illegal bribe to a Los Angeles City Councilmember.
