Larry Iser was quoted in Paul Blake’s ABC News article “Queen May Dislike Trump but Artists Have Limited Say in Who Uses Their Music,” Randy Lewis’s Los Angeles Times articles “Politics and pop music: Will frequent adversaries ever come together” and “Queen doesn’t want the GOP to use ‘We Are the Champions,’ but is the law on their side?” and Aaron Smith’s CNNMoney article “George Harrison estate offended that RNC used his music,” which discuss the unauthorized use of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” and George Harrison’s “Here Comes the Sun” by the GOP and presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Queen argues that the GOP and Trump do not have the right to use their song while GOP officials counter that they have the right to use the song through a blanket license. In Larry’s opinion, any candidate running for office needs to respect copyrights and a good place to start is during the campaign.
“Anyone running for president needs to respect copyrights, which find their origin in Article I section 8 of the Constitution,” Larry told The Times. “If a candidate hopes to someday take the oath to preserve and protect the Constitution, respecting it during the campaign is a good place to start.”
