In a recent article featured in the July/August 2022 edition of Los Angeles Lawyer Magazine, Kate Mangels examines John Carreyrou’s book Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley and its impact on healthcare technology company Theranos and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes.
In the article, Kate analyzes Bad Blood’s content, noting that the book includes not only Holmes’ story, but the personal experiences of former Theranos employees and investors and alleged victims of Theranos’s flawed medical testing. For example, Kate notes that the book includes a story from a former laboratory director who alleged Holmes and Theranos’ former president Sunny Balwani were inclined to run HIV tests on diluted finger-stick samples, which would make them unreliable. Kate notes that this issue was presented in trial when a former Theranos patient testified she had received a false HIV-positive test, among a number of other allegations involving inaccurate test results.
“The human impact of the alleged fraud perpetrated by Theranos comes through in Bad Blood due to Carreyrou’s intimate telling of individual patient stories,” Kate writes. “Yet, as he writes at the end of Bad Blood, the full legal fallout of Theranos remains to be seen.”
