The firm is pleased to announce that Jonathan Steinsapir and Greg Korn were recently recognized on the Los Angeles and San Francisco Daily Journal’s annual list of the “Top Intellectual Property Lawyers” in California. This highly selective issue honors top-performing intellectual property lawyers based on the impact of their work in patent litigation, trademark, and copyright.
Jonathan’s profile in the Daily Journal’s special issue highlights his 24-year career and legal practice that evolved from patent, copyright, and trademark work into a practice centered primarily on copyright and trademark litigation. In recent years, Jonathan has worked on high-profile cases that include serving as lead trial and appellate counsel for the Estate of Michael Jackson, to defending his clients’ copyright interests in songs written by Motown songwriter Ron Miller, who wrote hits for Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, and Frank Sinatra.
When reflecting back on his two mentors, Dale Kinsella and the late Howard Weitzman, who shaped his work, Jonathan noted, “These were two extremely different lawyers and people; the lesson I learned from that was to be yourself when you practice law and the clients who want you will find you.”
Greg’s almost three-decade career in intellectual property law with a focus on copyright and trademark matters in the entertainment industry was also recognized in this year’s issue. As noted by the Daily Journal, Greg served as lead attorney on major copyright cases involving the film “Elysium,” the television series “New Girl,” and the Justin Bieber song “Somebody to Love.”
When noting challenges in the industry, Greg explained, “The common obstacle we face when defending copyright infringement cases is that there will often appear to be many similarities between two works at a certain level of abstraction. The job of defense counsel in these cases is to help the judge understand how and why these similarities exist only at the level of unprotected ideas rather than protectable expression.“
Congratulations to Jonathan and Greg on this well-deserved recognition!
